Salaam Shriners received it's dispensation in April of 1903 and was Chartered for operations in July of that same year. We are an associate member of the Mid-Atlantic Association Shrine Association. Our affiliated hospital is the Philadelphia location. We are one of 15 Shrine Centers located in Region 10 of Shriners International. Originally located in the Renaissance city of Newark, we now call Whippany New Jersey as our home Oasis after having been located for many years in Livingston.
Active units and clubs have included Oriental Band, String band, Motor Corps, Shepherds, Potentate's Aides, Clowns, Morris County and Lakeland Shrine Clubs, Director's Staff, and Legion of Honor. Salaam Shrine was originally based out of Newark, New Jersey and the area was a major hub of big time Beer Breweries and self made inventors and entrepeneurs. Our Newark home was built in the neo classical style by Architect Frank Grad and eventually became home to the Newark Symphony Hall which still stands today. In the mid 1960's, our new location became a more suburban area of Livingston, New Jersey having maintained our identity as an Essex County New Jersey based operation serving most of the Northern to the Central region of the State. At our peek, our membership average was about 10,000 Masons!
However, Salaam was not done reinventing itself. The sale of our Livingston Oasis in the mid 2000's led us to a temporary home for a few years in Fairfield and then finally, to our newest home in the Oasis of Whippany, New Jersey. Our member base today, is about 500 nobles, and we continue to work in establishing our name in the community. We regularly serve our regional hospital in Philadelphia by providing on-going transport of patients for treatment and scheduled care. At times, we even will provide transportation to the Boston Hospital for scheduled surgeries and treatment of pediatric patients in need.
Our leadership today is poised to direct us to success as a Shrine Center and continue to support our main charity of helping children in need of pediatric care with a dose of fun and fellowship along the way.
