A Year in the Books

Gianna and Juan Diego

International Patient Ambassadors Juan Diego and Gianna

When International Patient Ambassadors Gianna and Juan Diego hit the stage at Imperial Session last July, they were filled with nervous excitement.

Unsure of what the year ahead would bring, they knew one thing: They wanted to give back to the healthcare system that has transformed their lives. A year later, these remarkable teens are reflecting on their incredible experience of representing the care that Shriners International proudly supports.

Take us back to Imperial Session in Charlotte when you were introduced as the 2023-2024 ambassadors. What was it like for you to share your stories of hope and resilience in front of so many Shriners for the first time?

Gianna: My heart was racing and I didn’t know what to expect, but I had received a lot of great advice, help and encouragement. The Shriners Children’s staff, my parents, and everyone told me that the Shriners and their families would be proud and supportive, and that is exactly what happened. As soon as we got off the stage, Juan Diego and I had the biggest smiles and we started jumping up and down. It was wonderful! Then we got to meet so many Shriners and their wives – that was so touching for me.

Juan Diego: I felt so much adrenaline because I still felt like that same 14-year-old Honduran kid who had arrived in Boston with a terrible burn. That day, it was super cold, I was afraid of all the doctors and nurses, and I didn’t know anyone. I couldn’t believe I was now representing Shriners Children’s, and I tried to appreciate every moment. I was so nervous, but after we finished our speeches, I turned to Gianna and yelled, “That was so crazy!”

What surprised you most about being International Patient Ambassadors?

Gianna: I didn’t anticipate what a strong community I would form with the marketing team and with Juan Diego and his family. From the first time I met Juan Diego I immediately liked the guy. He has good morals and he is big into his family. He’s funny and charming and fun! It’s just such a comfort to have so much reassurance and support and to go through this year together.

Juan Diego: I never thought my story could touch so many people. I feel just like a regular teenager, but I have seen the response of people from patients to staff to Shriners. It’s not because of what I have done, but it’s what Shriners Children’s has done for me. Others can identify with me – maybe they are from Latin America or are a burn survivor too – and my story can inspire them to have hope.

How has your perspective on the Shriners fraternity grown or changed?

Gianna: My father is a Shriner, so I have always had respect and love for people who are in the fraternity. Seeing Shriners grow internationally is so important to me, because they are helping more and more kids. This year has helped me realize even more how dedicated Shriners are.

Juan Diego: I didn’t realize the fraternity was so big and what an amazing reach it has across the world. I had thought the Shriners were just in North America and Central America. It’s awesome that Shriners International has helped children all around the world. I am so thankful to the Shriners and for this opportunity for Gianna and me to show our gratitude..
