In the 1980s, Shriners Children’s identified another need in pediatric medical care – rehabiliation for spinal cord injuries. The healthcare system established the first spinal cord injury unit in the United States specifically for children and teenagers at Shriner’s Children’s Philadelphia. In 1984, the hospitals in Chicago and San Francisco – later relocated to Sacramento – began offering spinal cord rehabilitation.
