Shriners-themed Christmas Tree is the Centerpiece of a Merry Prairie Christmas

Shriner Christmas tree

The 29.5-foot Black Hills spruce tree was decorated by representatives from three South Dakota Shriners chapters and is a celebration of the Shriners fraternity’s 150th anniversary and Shriners Children’s 100th anniversary.

What has 48 Fezzy bears from Build-a-Bear Workshop, 100 Shriners International 150th anniversary ornaments, 100 Shriners Children’s 100th anniversary ornaments and hundreds of hand-decorated ornaments from patients and Shriners Children’s Twin Cities? The Shriners Christmas tree on display at the “Merry Prairie Christmas” at the Capitol Building in Pierre, South Dakota!

Three Shriners International chapters: Naja, El Riad and Yelduz Shriners, and primary decorators Diana Holloway and Kristi Wagner, collaborated on decorations for the 29.5-foot Black Hills spruce tree that was the focal point of the tree lighting ceremony, hosted by Governor Kristi Noem, on November 22. The Shriners-themed tree is one of 66 trees on display.

On the big night, Shriners Children’s Ohio and Minneapolis patient Gavin had the honor of lighting the tree with Governor Noem. Gavin, 14, is a survivor of meningoccal meningitis, a rare but serious bacterial infection. He has undergone 46 surgeries, including amputation of this leg as a result of the infection. “Thank you for your perseverance and for being strong,” Governor Noem told Gavin during the tree lighting ceremony.

A “Merry Prairie Christmas” is on display through December 26, 2022.
